MEET RECORD?...I DON’T THINK SO

by Walt Murphy/Eastern Track

Have an opinion?  Please respond to Walt at WMurphy25@aol.com

When Michelle Rorke ran 10:49.15 to lead a Bronxville (NY) 1-2-3 sweep in

the girls 3200-meters at the recent Bishop Loughlin Games at NY’s Armory, and

was given credit for a meet record,  an old argument was rekindled.

Ever since the Loughlin Games, one of the largest (if not THE largest) high

school meets in the country, switched to metric events (except for the mile)

many years ago, Ed Bowes, the successful Loughlin coach and meet director,

has kept two sets of meet records, one for the discontinued yard distances,

such as the 600 and 1000, and one for the new metric distances.

A harmless gesture, you might say. Maybe, until you examine the meet records

for the boys and girls 3200-meters.

Despite the fact that Howie McNiff (Albertus Magnus,NY) and Lynne Strauss

(State College,Pa) ran 9:09.8(1972) and 10:36.5(1981), respectively, for the

longer 2-mile distance, the Loughlin program carried the following times as

meet records for the shorter 3200-meters--9:22.0 and 11:04.36(pre-Rorke), the

“logic” being that those were the fastest times run since the 3200 replaced

the 2-mile.

After years of trying to convince my good friend Bowes that the 2-mile times

should be recognized as the 3200 bests(with no conversions involved), since

Orvis and Strauss ran faster for a longer distance, he tried to appease me by

adding the following to the records page, “...we do recognize that many of

the yard records are substantially superior to the meter mark”.

Sorry, Ed, but that’s not good enough. A “record” is supposed to reflect the

best performance for a particular event, and that’s just not the case with

the Loughlin records. As fine a race as Rorke ran, she did not run the

fastest time ever (at Loughlin) for 3200-meters. That honor still belongs to

Strauss, who obviously (at least to some) passed 3200-meters on her way to

the 2-mile finish line.

Bowes, like so many other well-meaning people in the sport, seems to have

this built-in resistance to logic when it comes to discussing the metric vs

yards “dilemma”.  An easy solution to this particular problem would be to

switch back from the 3200 to the original 2-mile distance. How ‘bout it, Ed?
