2004 PRE-SEASON
BOYS OPEN RANKINGS   NYS RANK
1.NORTH ROCKLAND - AA NR will be trying to win their 4th straight Section 1 Class title, something that hasn't been done by a large school in Section 1 in at least the last 30 years.  They bring back 1-2-6-7 and had a super strong JV team last year.
2.TAPPAN ZEE - A They bring back 2,3,4 from their State Championship team and they had some fine JV runners last year.  They'll need some new talent to step up, but they will be the favorite to win the Class A title this year.
3.PEARL RIVER - B They bring back 1-4-5 from last year and had a strong JV team as usual.  The Pirates always have a strong team, and this year promises to be another one.  They are the slight favorite over Somers to win the Class B title.
4.SOMERS  -B The Tuskers bring back a formidable top two in Viglione and Bean.  Throw in Swiatocha, and that's a tough top three.  If their 4th and 5th progress, they will be one of the top Class B teams in the State, but getting past Pearl River will be one tough challenge.
5.JOHN JAY-EF - AA Life after Hakon DeVries and coach Perks will be different for sure, but this is a squad that brings back 2-3-4-5-6 runners, and most have made some nice improevements since XC.  Look for Kwamya to lead this team, but getting North Rockland will be a tough task.
6.ARLINGTON - AA Losing Ceriello and Smithers is tough, but they bring back 3-4-5-7 and Dan Cartica was't even in that race.  Their usual depth doesn't seem to be there, but never count out a program like Arlington.  They are probably ranked a little low, but they'll change that for sure.
7.HORACE GREELEY - A Andrew Levy should be one of the best around, but the team doesn’t seem to have the star power of recent years.  Greeley always has new runners emerge after the summer, so expect this Greeley squad to find a way to be competetive - they always do.
8.BRONXVILLE - C With the Wisner's out front and only losing #3 and #7, look for the Broncos to be strong again.  They will need a strong year to hold off what should be a very nice Edgemont team.
9.EDGEMONT - C Coach Youngs should have his team ready to make a run at Bronxville.  They bring back 3-4-5-7 and Brodsky has made some nice progress.  Should be an exciting year in Class C.
10.SCARSDALE - A Bringing back almost your entire team is always nice, and the fact that Bumstein has really come on this year makes them a team to watch.  With the right summer, Scarsdale could make some noise this fall.
GIRLS OPEN RANKINGS   NYS RANK
1.SUFFERN - AA Suffern placed 6th at the NYS Champs in Class A last year and brig back entire top seven.  They have the elite runners and supporting cast to do something special.
2. PEARL RIVER - B They were very young last year and they still found a way to win their 25th straight Sectional title.  They bring back 6 of 7 and most of them have made nice improvements since.  They will be tough to beat again.
3.BRONXVILLE - C On paper, it may look like the Bronco's will be a little down, but with Hudson and Clark's  progress over the past year as well as a slew of talented 7th and 8th graders coming in, look for Bronxville to be one of the tops in the state again.
4.HORACE GREELEY - A What a front three they have in McNamara, Levy, and Houser, as all of them are capable of running 20:30 or better.  If they can fill out their 4th and 5th spots, they will be a very dangerous team.
5.TAPPAN ZEE - A Another team that was young last year and brings back 6 of 7.  TZ ran great in th middle of the year.  If they can find a way to hold that form the rest of the season, they will be right there with Greeley.  This team has some nice depth.
6. NORTH ROCKLAND - AA This team is very dangerous on paper.  They bring back the top 6 from last year, and the youngsters have made some nice improvements since XC.  This could be a very good team.
7. JOHN JAY-EF - AA they lose 3 of their top 5 from last year but return Julie McCloskey, a top runner.  Year in and year out they have solid squads, and they should again this year.
8. ARLINGTON - AA they lose the top two, but 3-7 are all back.  If they progress and add some more talent, they’ll be dangerous, but it’s pretty competitive in Class AA.
9. SOMERS - B TheTuskers bring back Mary Alice Howard after skipping last year with an injury and Dana Mitchell is back after two seasons at Bronxville.  Add on newcomer Sarah Keating and veteran Swiatocha, and this team seems to have four girls under 21:30.  With a 5th, they become a dangerous team.
10.NEW ROCHELLE - AA They were young last year and only lose Offebia Hanson-Hall this year.  Look for this squad to be better and have some nice depth.
